The Department of Education (DfE) recognises that ‘in order to help children to succeed, schools have a role to play in supporting them to be resilient and mentally healthy’. At Wentworth Primary School, we are committed to supporting the emotional health and wellbeing of all our pupils and staff.
Over the course of their primary education, children spend over 8,000 hours at school so schools provide an ideal environment for promoting good emotional wellbeing and identifying early behaviour changes and signs of mental distress.
As a school, we are on the journey to becoming a Nurture School. The six principles of nurture are woven into all aspects of our school life and underpin our approach to building positive relationships and resilience, and improving wellbeing and social, emotional and mental health. Our role in school is to ensure that children are able to manage times of change and stress, and that they are supported to reach their potential or access help when they need it. Children are taught when to seek help and what help is available. We also have a role to ensure that children learn about what they can do to maintain positive mental health, what affects their mental health and how they can help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues. As part of our targeted provision, we access outside help and support for pupils when required.
-
Our School Values of Pride, Respect, Empathy, Courage, Curiosity and Resilience allow both staff and pupils to be part of our shared nurturing environment. We promote healthy mental health through these core values.
-
We have a PSHE curriculum that helps pupils to build important life skills, such as resilience, relationships, habits of mind and a growth mindset.
-
We follow the Zones of Regulation Curriculum across the school and teach our pupils to identify emotions in themselves and others and provide them with a bank of strategies to help regulate their emotions and improve their wellbeing.
-
We have a Mentoring Programme which supports identified pupils by buddying them up with a member of staff to guide them through times of difficulty.
-
Our Behaviour Policy focuses on promoting positive social behaviour, regulating emotions and restoring relationships.
-
Around the school, we have worry boxes and worry monsters for pupils to share their worries with a safe adult.
-
We have Upper Key Stage 2 children as Sports Leaders who act as play leaders to support younger children in positive play.
-
We have a range of quieter, nurturing lunchtime provision in The Nest and The Sanctuary to promote mental health and wellbeing and support for pupils who find busy lunchtimes stressful.
-
Throughout the school year we have mental health and wellbeing assemblies to promote resilience and self-management.
-
We have wellbeing drop ins and coffee mornings for parents/carers to attend led by school staff to offer help and advice.
-
We have move up days, extra transition sessions and meet the teacher sessions for when a pupil is finding a class move difficult.
-
We include World Mental Health Day and Mental Health Awareness Week in the school calendar and plan activities for the whole school.
